Project Summary

We have developed mobile routers designed for disaster emergency and rural area communications. Cutting-edge technology, like Self-Configuring/Self-Healing Networking and Disruption Tolerant Networking, has been incorporated. Current plan includes technology transfers and trainings to enable rural villagers to use build community information network for use in their daily lives.

Background

Large scale disasters can disable communication networks, hampering rescue and recovery operations. Post-disaster emergency networking requires fast setup with all the devices available at hands.

Objectives

To research and develop DUMBONET mobile routers which have the ability to form high-speed, self-configuring, self-healing networks suitable for disaster emergency and rural area communications. DUMBONET mobile routers are intended to operate in highly challenged environment (e.g. forest, rural community areas, and vehicles) and do not require public Internet infrastructure. We are working on a plan to incorporate DTN-enabled distance education services into DUMBONET mobile routers for general use in every day’s lives

Technical details and contribution to innovation

- Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) based on Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol -- to allow the formation of self-configuring, self-healing network among participating mobile routers.

- Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) -- to enable communications in disruptive network conditions due to environmental or operational factors.

- Structured Mesh Overlay Network (SMON) -- to allow service and resource discovery among participating routers.

- Distributed Peer-to-peer SIP – to allow registration of VoIP clients and making VoIP calls in self-contained MANET (without relying on centralized or external SIP server)

- Bluetooth-to-DTN, E-mail-to-DTN services -- to allow various devices and front-end applications to use the underlying DTN service.

- Social Networking on MANET (SocMANET) -- to enable social network capability (i.e. Twitter™-like) in disruptive MANET.

- Host Access Point (hostapd) -- to allow common-off-the-shelve (COTS) devices like iPad, iPhone, Android tablets and smartphones to directly connect to emergency or rural area network (i.e. without jail-breaking these devices).

Activities

The research and development of mobile routers aimed for disaster emergency situations. The mobile routers can collaboratively create one or more self-configuring, self-healing internet-like emergency or community networks. Multimedia information can be transferred, distributed and stored in such networks.

Outcomes

- Proof-of-concept fully-functional DUMBONET mobile routers which have been improved and tested in various situations: on land, on vehicles, in forest

- Training and deployment of DUMBONET mobile routers in post-cyclone Nargis situation in Myanmar (2008)
