Project Summary

Sharing Awareness has done mutual projects with Fasial Public Schools and a feasibility study during March- April 2012 with a goal of expanding our outreach to the community and its schools. And so that the children, parents and community involvement in the project will collaborate with SA and strengthen its role as change-makers in society.

Therefore, this increases their influence to be a part of the community development at the local level. In this project, our goal is that teachers and schools have a stronger role, and access and practical experience of a larger network to work on community development and empowering students, teachers, parents and school.

Background

In many developing countries, teaching and learning methods have generally been based on examinations rather than knowledge application. This approach has negatively influenced students’ ability to understand the most basic and elementary foundation to understanding complex theories – the ability to read. It is definitely without doubt that the lack of reading skills among children is not just based on the teachers inability to facilitate learning but also on other underlying factors like access to reading material, support groups, social practices and culture, poor governance and the position of different genders in society – specifically women.

Justification

This project nominated to the ISIF Asia award because…

Our vision is that every child should have the best teacher by using progressive methods and ideas, focusing on e-learning in authentic school environments. And by basing all our work on local needs and wishes, we ensure that the exchange of knowledge in any training program is mutual.

Objectives

The project is seeking to address challenges relating to access of educational resources, quality of education in Multan, Pakistan. The objective is to improve learning via improved access to open content, which will benefit three primary schools and will directly and indirectly benefit close to 3000 people.

SA proposes to develop Library in Faisal public School and increase access of all types of digital resources in the school and in Jahangirabad community. This project will increase the number of open content resources available to school librarians and teachers. Moreover, it will integrate discovery with use and adaptation, thus ensuring sustained effect on learning. Traditionally, teachers and students have pointed to only physical resources, but they have the technical capacity to include records that point to a range of media. This project thus will strive for greater distribution and increased awareness of open content. The eLibrary will be low cost, user-friendly general reference tool, and delivers a broad collection of periodical resources and digital media content.

Technical details and contribution to innovation

Moodle- can be accessed to all schools that want to be evolved. In Moodle there is an elibrary providing the products to be downloaded, printed out and delivered to local libraries, and other community facilities. This Learning Management System is just like the best of schools with tutors, experts, and learning materials based on different kind of digital media such as video, radio, pictures and so on. Also it’s easily accessible through mobile phones.

eBooks- eBooks will be packaged to increase accessibility.
ICT resources will be provided in a form of eBooks for additional information to address topics, which covers from basic to advanced.

Facebook, youtube and other digital resources- Schools and related facilities offer the best possibilities for learning. As the local material resources are very limited such as books both for teachers and pupils, the available reading resources are very scarce. And the visual image is re-gaining importance as transmitter of meanings. Both text and image availability will be increased in electronic form and supplemented by sound and video. Besides this the locally produced materials will be shared openly through social media Facebook, youtube and others. This way the materials will be delivered and offers sustainability and cost effectiveness.
