Project Summary

This project aims to increase the Internet accessibility in Bangladesh, especially by the non-skilled or unemployed young generation. Unemployment problem is a curse of the country and one of the main reasons behind this is the lack of skilled human resources. Proper training and learning facilities might help them to contribute to the economy of the country as well as to lead a better life. In this project, we have developed an android app named “Sohoj Sonchoy” that provides the people with the opportunity to get training on various interested topics through online video tutorials. Through watching and learning from the hands-on video tutorials, people can develop their skills to get better jobs, become self-employed and entrepreneurs. Moreover, women can easily learn and train themselves that surely improves the women’s empowerment in Bangladesh. The training materials help them to learn how to prepare handmade products, fast foods, garments, and thus they can contribute to the economy of the country. Furthermore, we have also included various first aids and safety training during hazards and calamities including primary healthcare, building collapse, fire on garment buildings, etc. People working in garments or other industries, here in Bangladesh do not have any drill experience or they do not know what they should do in that situation to survive. Through this android app the mass people can watch online video tutorials of different categories, develop their skills, learn new techniques, get better jobs, become self-employed and diminish the unemployment problem of the country.

Background

Bangladesh is a third world developing and 8th most populous nation in the world [1] [2]. According to the Bureau of Manpower, Bangladesh, only 56.7 million (above 15 years) is economically active people [3]. But unfortunately, this country submerges in unemployment problem. The rate of unemployment in Bangladesh according to the study has now risen some 11 per cent from what was 8.0 percent in 2002 and 2.4 per cent in 1990. If these people are properly trained, then the unemployment rate of this country will decrease and GDP of Bangladesh will go much higher. Realizing this, the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training has established only 26 Technical Training Centers (TTC). Among 26 TTCs, only 6 are for women training. But 26 TTCs is not sufficient to train huge unemployed people. It is costly to setup at least one TTC in each 500 upazilla in Bangladesh. Moreover, the recent fire in garment factory and building collapse take away lots of life. The reason behind this they do not know what they should do in those situations. Therefore, they could not survive from this tragic scene. If they are conscious, then they have better chance of surviving. So we have come up with an idea of “Sohoj Sonchoy” from where the people can learn and train themselves and increase their skills as well as they can earn more money and they can increase their savings easily. In 2013, almost five companies already have started their service and they will provide service all over the country very soon. So the Internet connection speed increases. Now, people can access the Internet from rural side of Bangladesh. The total number of Mobile Phone subscribers is 106.934 million and the total number of Internet subscribers is 35.63 million [4]. Our app “Sohoj Sonchoy” is on the basis of Android app, where they can watch online video tutorials and develop skills. As rural people can access the Internet from almost all the places in Bangladesh, so an android app can be the best solution to provide training videos to them.
